Suffering from A Creative Block? Here’s What to Do

Art is a wonderful way to keep the mind active and creative. However, sometimes it’s difficult for even the most creative painters to come up with new and inspiring ideas for their paintings. All the ideas are either taken or aren’t exciting enough.

This phenomenon is called “creative block” and is very common among artists. It may result in months and months going by without you coming up with an exciting new idea.

However, it isn’t a reason to worry. Here are some effective ways you can overcome a creative block.

Work It Up

Artists usually spend a lot of time indoors trying to perfect their paintings, giving them less time to exercise. Medical studies support that exercise or engaging in any physical activity results in dopamine release in the brain.

High dopamine levels boost motivation and creativity and make one open to new experiences. If you haven’t worked your body up in a while, maybe that’s the reason for your creative block.

Surround Yourself with the Right People

Being surrounded by supportive and positive people has a positive impact on your mental wellbeing. Surrounding yourself with people who appreciate your creative abilities, inspire you, and motivate you can positively impact your mood.

It’s never too late to find the right company because research suggests that the happier you are, the more creative you become.

Don’t be Afraid of Experimenting

The best thing about art is that it allows you to express yourself without any restrictions or boundaries. It allows you to express yourself in a way that even words can’t. When you’re experiencing a creative block, use this element to your advantage.

If there’s an idea you kept shutting down because it was too ‘unrealistic’ or ‘crazy’, it’s time to realize that such words don’t exist in the realm of art. Let your imagination go wild and brace yourself for a beautiful end result.

Consider a Reflexive Distance

Often, you tend to get too wrapped up in your work, and the pressure hinders your ability to think creatively. That’s a sign that you need to distance yourself from your work and reflect on it.

Take a vacation, go on a trip with your family, develop a new skill or hobby. A change in environment or routine helps to achieve a fresh perspective on things. You begin to view things differently and end up finding inspiration in the most mundane things.
